Hi there Waybound readers!
So, how about The Akrotiri Journals? That was a much more experimental piece but I think it came out great. I hope it left you with some lingering questions alongside some answers. Kylie may be one of my favorite characters to have written so far. I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it (or preferably, more so!)
I wanted to give everybody an update on when the next short story is coming and give everybody some housekeeping updates. This is going to be a shorter one, but I'd like to encourage all you subscribers (or readers, too— I'm not picky) to leave your thoughts on what you've seen so far and on today's discussion both in the comments here and on the Waybound Discord server. (Check out the buttons below.)
Coming Attractions
We already have the slate for the next few short stories planned out. The next short story is called Sign of the Times and will be another look at the Akrotiri Crisis of 2506— this time from the skies above rather than the ground below. We’ll be following along with Northstar Spacelines cargo handler Wyn Lebasque and the crew of the C/S Siren’s Song, as well as the infamous Captain Kaylin Rama and her MFRS MEDINA RIDGE (B101).
A lore post for the Federated Minervan Navy, For Liberty and Country, to mirror United in Duty, Unmatched in Resolve is also in the works. This one might take a bit. Not quite sure.
Unfortunately, I recently graduated college and started a full time job. This is good news for me but bad news for my writing schedule. I write in short bursts of inspiration and unfortunately my schedule has forced me to head to sleep much earlier than I’d wished, and I haven’t been the most productive with my weekends yet. This is going to slow the pace of writing, and I no longer think the once-a-month model is even an accurate goal to shoot for. I’ll keep trying but for now, assume Waybound shorts will be out when they are out. I would personally expect Sign of the Times sometime in early or late November. No promises.
Arc Flashes
Now we’re firmly in the Akrotiri Crisis sub-arc of the Interbellum Arc, and I hope things are starting to come together for everybody. As more pieces of the puzzle fall into place I fully expect there to be more questions than answers for a while. That’s good. Stew on them. Let ‘em marinate.
Something big is cooking. Feel free to theorize in the comments, here and on the pieces themselves.
Guest Stars
I mentioned Guest Stories in the last UNOW, and the roster is expanding. I won’t name names yet, but as time goes on you should start seeing some stories from authors I trust to write WAYBOUND well, and trust me, these authors all are great. No ETA on the first one, but sometime in the future you’ll see their work to help fill in gaps in the release schedule.
I love ‘em, and hopefully, you all will too.
In Closing
Thanks for bearing with me for how long The Akrotiri Journals took to write. I’m really enjoying the flexibility and versatility that anthology storytelling is giving me, and I can’t wait for what’s to come. I hope you enjoyed the story, especially the ending.
If you've enjoyed Waybound, feel free to drop a comment below about whatever the hell you think was going on at the end of that last story; tell your friends about us; join our Discord; yell at me on Twitter (@njmksr), and if you haven't already, drop a subscription here! It's free. It's fun. It has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration to diagnose, treat, prevent, and cure cyberplagues1, but that doesn’t mean it won’t work!
We hope you're having as much fun with this as we are. Let us know what you think, and we'll see you around.
Who knows. Maybe it'll work for you. No harm in trying, right?
